The future of Social Media; how conversation and behaviour is changing
February 13, 2009 | 3 Comments
I was asked to give a talk on this at Use8’s recent conference on Social Media. I am not claiming to have all the answers as I don’t believe we ever will have, but a few of you have asked to see it so here you go. Most of my slides are just images, so if you view it through Slideshare, I have inserted notes so the presentation will make more sense.
Youmeo or not?

I have been a Beta invite for Youmeo (meaning You and me Online) which is a (nother) new social networking site targeted at the youger audience. Youmeo allows users to manage multiple social networks (Facebook, Digg, Twitter, Last.fm etc.) from the Youmeo site also enabling users to feed in their activity within these spaces into one news feed on Youmeo. The site was originally used as a network for nightclub goers from the West Midlands and from browsing the current users already on the site, it will very much remain occupied by this younger audience who are probably looking for a change from Face party and don’t want to hang out with the grown ups on Friend Feed.
Book publishing for kids

We are always telling clients to understand their audience and talk to them at their level, but this new offering from Tikatok has made me think that this should be applied to more services. Through the site, kids can write their own bedtime story, upload their drawings to illustrate it and then share it with their friends and family through their network. For $20 they are also able to print off a hardback or paperback version of their creation to keep.
Who blogs now?

eMarketer have just published a new report looking into demographics of bloggers. Interestingly enough I am often being told that blogs are a fad that 18-24’s adopt and will never hit mainstream (we have possibly argued extensively out if that’s you), but the average age is actually 37.6. What struck me the most about this report is looking at how the new generation are starting to consume media with 71% of 13-24’s watching and reading content written by others on the web and 35% of them keeping a blog themselves compared to 34% of them using the web to watch TV. I was having this conversation with Ruby last week on how we are starting to see the younger generation using technology as a matter of fact and do not see it as this wonderful `new’ thing that will change their lives. If you link to this video, you will see the quite wonderful Clay Shirky provide a wonderful example of a time when he was at his friends house watching TV with his friend and their 4 year old daughter. After a while the little girl gets up, wanders over to the TV and starts playing with the wires behind it. “What are you doing there honey” Dad asks. “I’m looking for the mouse”. To a 4 year old, a screen that doesn’t allow you to interact with it is broken. Enough said.
