Muxtape is a great site that allows users to upload their MP3’s to make mixtapes for the modern era.  A particularly great one from Mr Lloyd Davis can be found here.

Rickroll flash mob

April 16, 2008 | Leave a Comment

So I am a little late writing this post but on Friday evening I headed over to Liverpool Street Station to take part in the Rick Astely flashmob. If you don’t know what a flashmob is then you can look here. If you don’t know what all the fuss is about with Rick Astley then you can find out here.

As flashmobs go, it wasn’t one of the greatest but it was still really fun nevertheless. 5:59pm people were loitering around the departure boards and as the final ten seconds took us to 6pm the excitement began. It is unfortunate that more people watched rather than participate as it’s not really in the spirit of flashmobs however, you can see what you think courtesy of my Qik video

Rockstar Games (Grand Theft Auto 4) is allowing players to link through to Amazon and purchase each track they hear within the game.  The mechanism is built into the game’s mobile phone system and as the character drives around listening to the radio, they can bookmark a song by dialing the number ZIT-555-0100 to get sent a text message back with the artist and track details. Stars launching their own social networks

First Kylie and then Fiddy (50 Cent to you and I).  Stars are now starting to launch their own social networks sharing tour news and other delights that I don’t really care about (well from these two anyway).  I obviously find it hard to believe that the stars themselves are posting to these sites, but I can’t help but feeling they are nothing more than glorified websites? 50 Cents site contains a little more content than Kylie’s admittedly, and has just clocked up 160,000 users which can’t be sniffed at.  I can understand that if you are a 50 Cent fan, then this is your paradise but it leaves me feeling that this is simply an alternative to MySpace created by his PR agency.

Beatboxing basset hound

I love this but probably because it appeals to my childish streak. Forsman & Bodenfors have created this campaign for Tele2 in Sweden. The concept is simple. You have a Basset Hound, you have a sampler and you simply put them together and get the little doggy to perform for you. What’s not to love? Simple yet effective.

Adidas originals build your own festival

Adidas have teamed up with Vice magazine in Australia to launch a great new site allowing users to create their dream music festival. The Originals Festival site allows users to select from a range of artists within their $100k budget, pick their running order, pick their location for the event and then design a poster to advertise the festival on their MySpace pages and blogs to friends. The users with the highest attendance (most number of visitors) will win tickets to the Berlin Festival 2008. I spent most of my money on Underworld and LCD Soundsystem so mine was more of an evening affair rather than the full festival!

Pre Vu have launched a new talking CD case. The talking case allows you to send someone a video or music CD (or anything the size of a CD) with that extra bit of “you” attached—your own voice giving a personal 60 second greeting.

Musical roads

Developers from the Hokkaido Industrial Research Institute in Japan have built three “melody roads” in central and northern Japan, which act as tuning forks to play music as they travel along the road. “The concept works by using grooves, which are cut at very specific intervals in the road surface. Just as travelling over small speed bumps or road markings can emit a rumbling tone throughout a vehicle, the melody road uses the spaces between to create different notes.” Read more

No more charger problems

At last! Boing Boing have reported that the Open Mobile Terminal Platform (OMTP) group has decided to standardise mobile chargers so we can wave goodbye to annoying work emails such as “does anyone have a [insert desired brand] charger I can borrow”. The OMTP Group consists of companies such as Samsung, Motorola, Nokia, LG and Sony Ericsson. The decision is thought to have been a result of the environmental pressures that companies are now facing in how they recycle their equipment.

This is a great site created to celebrate the release of Bob Dylan’s Greatest Hits on 1st October.  The site pays homage to his video to Subterranean Homesick Blues and allows users to post messages on the cards within the video to then send to a friend.  Not a new technology granted, but a lovely simple viral to support the launch.
