This is a nice little series of experiements from Philips Design Probes.  Through tracking trends and developments that may evolve into mainstream issues that have an impact on business, they are focusing on key areas covering politics, economics, culture, environments and technology features which will enable them to understand lifestyle post 2020.  There are some really interesting projects going on including how we can create a sustainable habitat in 2020, but being a tattoo fan one that caught my eye in particular is The Electronics Tattoo.

Microsoft’s first game for Surface

Microsoft have developed the first game for Surface. The game is called Firefly and the concept remind me of Hungry Hippo’s whereby the user has to catch the firefly’s and bring them towards them until they can trap them in their glass jar. Sarcastic Gamer give their first-hand review of the game in this video.

Goodby, Silverstein & Partners have launched a really nice site for Adobe to support the launch of Creative Suite 3. Adobe Cards starts with a single card with a scrollbar along the bottom of the screen, offering you to move the bar to “take as much as you want”. As the user moves the scrollbar, the cards animate into a really stunning animation sequence.

I absolutely love this site. Visual Complexity was founded by Manuel Lima, an interaction designer who is currently Senior User Experience Designer at Nokia Design. Manuel describes the site as a resource space for anyone who is interested in the visualisation of complex networks. I can guarantee you won’t be able to put it down for at least 10 minutes.

So this week CES 2008 has been running in Las Vegas and Jeremy Gutsche has compiled this really nice round up of the top 20 gadgets to come out of the conference in this Trend Hunter report. Personally I want to play with the BigStage software to turn myself into a 3D avatar as my Wii avatar just doesn’t cut it anymore in comparison to this.

Digital paint brush

“I/O Brush is a drawing tool that explores colours, textures, and movements found in everyday materials by “picking up” and drawing with them. I/O Brush looks like a regular paintbrush but has a small video camera with lights and touch sensors embedded inside. Outside of the drawing canvas, the brush can pick up colour, texture, and movement of a brushed surface. On the canvas, artists can draw with the special “ink” they just picked up from their immediate environment.” This is a really great innovation and I am waiting for the consumer product version to launch. Barcode revolution

This is not new, but it is still cool which is why I am writing about it. Design barcode are a collective based out of Tokyo who design barcodes which reflect the product on which they appear. They have firmly established themselves in Japan and have recently partnered with PACARC, LLC to take the produce to the United States. I haven’t seen this being used within the UK market as yet but if any of you have, please post a link in the comments box as would love to see brands start to bring innovations like this to every element of their product.

Nokia are this years sponsor of the Christmas lights on Regent Street and have approached their agency Weiden & Kennedy to design the display. The creation is called `Unity’ and consists of 14 clusters of lights that change colour in the wind, temperature and from 14th December, users will be able to interact with the display via an interactive screen within Nokia’s new Regent Street store. A round of applause to Nokia on recognising the skills that agencies possess.

New Economist campaign

The Economist has moved away from their traditional riddles that served them so well over the last couple of years, and have moved into new territory through these clever yet simple statements. Created by AMV, the ads still maintain their traditional look and feel through their Red and White appearance however, they have since been set within a Black background. It’s a nice move away from their previous campaigns as they were never going to be an easy act to follow.

Tank Books in a cigarette packet

Tank, the creative and publishing agency have recently launched a series of books that mimic cigarette packs. They have a flip-top lid and a foil wrapping all packaged up in a cellophane cover making them every product designers dream. They have reproduced some of the classics including “Dr Jekyll and Mr. Hyde” and Tolstoy’s “Father Sergius”. I headed over to Daunt Books at the weekend and picked up Hemingway’s “The Snows of Kilimanjaro” and I love it, but be warned, they are flying off the shevles fast.
