This is a nice little series of experiements from Philips Design Probes. Through tracking trends and developments that may evolve into mainstream issues that have an impact on business, they are focusing on key areas covering politics, economics, culture, environments and technology features which will enable them to understand lifestyle post 2020. There are some really interesting projects going on including how we can create a sustainable habitat in 2020, but being a tattoo fan one that caught my eye in particular is The Electronics Tattoo.
Microsoft’s first game for Surface

Microsoft have developed the first game for Surface. The game is called Firefly and the concept remind me of Hungry Hippo’s whereby the user has to catch the firefly’s and bring them towards them until they can trap them in their glass jar. Sarcastic Gamer give their first-hand review of the game in this video.

Goodby, Silverstein & Partners have launched a really nice site for Adobe to support the launch of Creative Suite 3. Adobe Cards starts with a single card with a scrollbar along the bottom of the screen, offering you to move the bar to “take as much as you want”. As the user moves the scrollbar, the cards animate into a really stunning animation sequence.

I absolutely love this site. Visual Complexity was founded by Manuel Lima, an interaction designer who is currently Senior User Experience Designer at Nokia Design. Manuel describes the site as a resource space for anyone who is interested in the visualisation of complex networks. I can guarantee you won’t be able to put it down for at least 10 minutes.

Digital paint brush

“I/O Brush is a drawing tool that explores colours, textures, and movements found in everyday materials by “picking up” and drawing with them. I/O Brush looks like a regular paintbrush but has a small video camera with lights and touch sensors embedded inside. Outside of the drawing canvas, the brush can pick up colour, texture, and movement of a brushed surface. On the canvas, artists can draw with the special “ink” they just picked up from their immediate environment.” This is a really great innovation and I am waiting for the consumer product version to launch. New Economist campaign

The Economist has moved away from their traditional riddles that served them so well over the last couple of years, and have moved into new territory through these clever yet simple statements. Created by AMV, the ads still maintain their traditional look and feel through their Red and White appearance however, they have since been set within a Black background. It’s a nice move away from their previous campaigns as they were never going to be an easy act to follow.
Tank Books in a cigarette packet

Tank, the creative and publishing agency have recently launched a series of books that mimic cigarette packs. They have a flip-top lid and a foil wrapping all packaged up in a cellophane cover making them every product designers dream. They have reproduced some of the classics including “Dr Jekyll and Mr. Hyde” and Tolstoy’s “Father Sergius”. I headed over to Daunt Books at the weekend and picked up Hemingway’s “The Snows of Kilimanjaro” and I love it, but be warned, they are flying off the shevles fast.
